Following the (primarily U.S.) money funding Canada’s anti-oil movement

The David and Lucile Packard Foundation was involved in funding environmental efforts connected to Alberta’s oil sands.

    • Packard was one of several large U.S. foundations that funded Canadian environmental organizations working on climate, conservation, and fossil-fuel issues. Canadian parliamentary testimony from 2010–2012 specifically identified the Packard Foundation among the major U.S. funders active in Canada.
    • A 2014 investigation by Alberta Oil Magazine identified Packard as one of the foundations involved in the broader funding network behind campaigns opposing expansion of Canadian oil infrastructure.
    • Packard’s own records confirm that it has funded organizations and initiatives aimed at reducing fossil-fuel development, including work in Canada. For example, a Packard grant-making document explicitly solicited proposals from organizations headquartered in Alberta or B.C. for work including “combating extractive energy industries (i.e. oil, gas, bioenergy).”
    • There is also evidence of Packard’s participation in the broader climate network that funded campaigns and organizations working on oil and pipeline issues. For example, the Packard Foundation has supported Climate Breakthrough, which subsequently awarded a major grant to Keystone XL opponent Jane Kleeb.

From the article link above the following excerpt.

“Since 2001, Tides Canada has been paid $50 million by three American foundations: the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. How was this money spent? Was it re-granted to other organizations or was it spent internally by Tides Canada Foundation or through Tides Canada Initiatives Society? To put it bluntly, to what extent have Tides Canada’s internal programs been funded by American foundations?

Below, here is a list of the grants from three American foundations (Hewlett, Packard and Moore), for $50 million.”
