Raincoast Conservation Foundation was directly involved in opposition to Canada’s tar-sands oil expansion, particularly the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline and tanker project. The evidence goes beyond general environmental statements: Raincoast produced scientific reports, submitted expert evidence to federal hearings, participated in legal challenges and organized public-education campaigns
2003–2016 — Research, hearings and legal challenges
Raincoast says it began work to keep BC’s coast oil-free in 2003. Its work included marine surveys, technical evidence in the federal review, and legal challenges after the project was approved.
2013 — Scientific opposition to Northern Gateway
Raincoast published Embroiled: Salmon, Tankers and the Enbridge Northern Gateway Proposal, examining the risks that diluted bitumen transportation and oil spills posed to wild salmon and coastal ecosystems.
2012 — Public campaigning
Raincoast’s Groundswell campaign encouraged Canadians to oppose Northern Gateway and contact federal and provincial political leaders. It highlighted the pipeline’s role in transporting Alberta tar-sands oil to the Pacific coast.
The Raincoast Conservation Society is yet another one of many BC ENGO’s (environmental non-governmental organization) indicating more duplication of environmental opinions mostly at the expense of both truth and tax dollars.
This is not an elected group of people out of a membership but rather a career opportunity for a specific group of people, its highly paid activism.
From Revenue Canada here is what they pay themselves and in part what tax payers are paying them. (see statements below) taxpayers funded $654,402.00 in 2021. We did not post previous years but only the last year available on Revenue Canada at the time of our research.
If our governments who are funded to protect our environment are so incapable of doing so, then we need to replace them. Its clear to me their work and efforts are duplication of work done by our governments and it appears that everyone wants to run their own environmental organization and get paid for doing it.
Follow the money, there is a lot of money involved, including taxpayer dollars.
One of the projects that will most certainly hurt all Canadians is their effort to stop the Roberts Bank Terminal 2
These highly paid individuals also were big advocates of bill C69 and C48 – Bill C-48, legislation barring oil tankers from loading at ports on the northern coast of British Columbia. That bill passed on a vote of 49-46, only narrowly escaping defeat and Bill C-69, which overhauls the federal environmental assessment process for major construction projects, by a vote of 57-37.
