Environment

SkeeanaWild Conservation Trust – creating a global model of sustainability to the Skeena Watershed. A regional organization dedicated to bringing together governments, First Nations and members of the public in the Skeena Watershed to sustain the long-term health and resilience of the wild salmon ecosystem, while optimizing economic returns to First Nations and local communities.

Quoting CTV News in this story “Dispute over LNG pipeline leaves northern B.C. residents polarized” Like all hardcore NDP in Northern BC they all sit on the fence, so they won’t offend anyone. In our opinion a gutless or spineless way of doing politics, then behind the public public view they have no problem taking sides.

“Gladys Atrill, the acting mayor of Smithers, a town about 45 minutes from the entrance to the logging road, said council is also not taking a position on the project, although it has a good working relationship with the hereditary chiefs whose office is their town.”

On the issue of forestry, guess who shows up at the town council meeting where Bulkley Valley forestry industry representatives presented a united front to Smithers town council last week seeking a letter of support to push back against the provincial government’s old-growth deferral strategy. So who invited Dr Karen Price from Victoria, to speak at a Smithers town council meeting?

Council also heard from Karen Price, one of the scientists who did the review that led to the recommended deferrals.

Price used the first part of her presentation to unequivocally deny a persistent complaint that the five-member technical panel who prepared the report was biased with ties to American environmental activism handpicked to support the BC NDP’s environmental agenda.

““Contrary to what you may have read… we are not members of the Sierra Club, we have no ties to the Sierra Club,” she said.

Again Gladys Atrill publicly rides the fence, but we know where her allegiances lie.

Then we have the issue of Climate Emergency, seriously? Going back a few pages in history. From 2019 the following.

Smithers declares climate emergency” “Councillor Gladys Atrill put forward the motion in response to a delegation at their June 25th meeting. Mayor Taylor Bachrach says the declaration is necessary as the town is not yet at the level of emissions reductions required to meet their promised targets.”

Now here we are a number of years later and we now read “Town of Smithers hires a Climate Action Specialist” so we pose the question to our readers, was this coincidence or an agenda?

Then on the issue of the Telkwa Coal mine again she opposes resource extraction. Read her letter.

Funny how we could not find the original letter on the Smithers Town website. (click to enlarge)
